Marble Arch is one of London’s most iconic landmarks with it’s white marble face and trio of arches. It was designed in the early 1800s by John Nash as a state entrance to the official residence of the monarch, Buckingham Palace. Although it was moved to a different location in 1851 to a slightly inodorous position on a traffic island at the junction of Oxford Street, Park Lane and Edgeware Road, to this day the wonderful structure attracts tourists for sightseeing and photo opportunities. Thanks to it’s central location at the intersection of these busy hubs it makes a great meeting point for London locals. As well as giving its name to the nearby underground station, conveniently located for access to the hotels of Park Lane, shopping on Oxford Street and strolling in Hyde Park.
Fans of contemporary art may be hopping off at Marble Arch to take a picturesque walk through the lanes of the park to the famous Serpentine Gallery. Amongst London’s most popular art venues, the gallery is split across two sites and hosts exhibitions by established and up and coming artists alike. Architecture lovers should not miss the extension to the Serpentine Sackler building designed by the late, great Zaha Hadid. As well as yearly architecture pavilions by an ever changing array of exciting architects. Also located nearby is one of London’s most conveniently placed multiplex cinemas, the Odeon Marble Arch, with many screens showing the latest blockbusters.
